Pregnancy Massage for Swelling & Fluid Retention
Fluid builds. Ankles swell. Sleep grows harder to find. Our pregnancy massage for swelling helps you release what has built up, ease the weight you are carrying and feel more like yourself.
Most pregnancy massages focus on the back and legs and leave it there. Ours follows the path of your lymphatic system from your feet upward in a continuous, gentle sequence designed to move fluid rather than just soothe the surface of the skin.

Pregnancy massage for swelling at Atma is whole-body care designed around your trimester, your specific symptoms and how your body feels when you walk through the door.
Swelling in pregnancy settles in predictable places. Ankles collect fluid as the day goes on. Legs feel heavy and slow. Hands stiffen in the morning. Your lower back tightens as your posture shifts to carry extra weight. We work through all of these areas in sequence, using gentle rhythmic strokes that encourage your lymphatic system to drain, reduce built-up pressure and bring real relief to the places where you feel it most.
This is not a standard pregnancy massage with extra time added on. It is a considered, full-body session that leaves you feeling lighter, clearer and genuinely restored.
Nurturing relief for expecting & new mothers, just when you need it most.
Since 2008, we’ve been supporting expecting mothers through every stage of pregnancy and beyond. Our pregnancy massage isn’t something we added to our menu – it’s been central to our practice since day one. When local midwives and obstetricians recommend massage, they send their patients to us. Why? Because they know our therapists are properly trained, our techniques are completely safe, and we genuinely understand what pregnancy asks of your body. You’re not just getting a massage; you’re getting care from people who’ve helped thousands of mothers feel better during this transformative time.
Why pregnancy massage for swelling makes a difference
Some clients come to us in their first trimester, wanting to stay ahead of the discomfort. Others arrive in their third, when swelling and back pain have become part of everyday life.
Pregnancy massage for swelling is not only for those who are visibly puffy. It suits anyone who has been on their feet all day and needs proper recovery. Those whose sleep keeps breaking because their hips will not settle, or whose lower back tightens through the night. New mothers in the postnatal weeks, when the body is slowly finding its way back. And anyone who simply wants to feel genuinely at ease in their body again, rather than managing the discomfort from morning until night. We see all of these women at Atma, and every session is shaped around what that person needs.
Reduced Swelling
Gentle lymphatic strokes encourage your body to move excess fluid naturally, reducing the heaviness in your legs, ankles and hands that tends to build through the day and linger well into the evening.
Better Sleep
Releasing tension from your hips, lower back and shoulders makes a real difference to how you settle at night. Many clients report sleeping more deeply after a session, even in the final weeks of pregnancy.
Back Pain Relief
As your posture shifts to carry extra weight, your lower back and hips take on more load. Focused work in these areas releases the holding patterns your body has fallen into and eases that familiar daily ache.
Calmer from Within
Pregnancy activates your stress response in ways that are easy to underestimate. Slow, rhythmic work encourages your nervous system to settle, and that calm tends to stay with you well after you leave.
Postnatal recovery
Fluid retention does not always clear the moment your baby arrives. Postnatal sessions support your body in clearing what remains, helping you start to feel genuinely like yourself again in those first weeks.
Adapted for You
Every session is adjusted for your trimester, your symptoms and your comfort. Pressure, positioning and focus areas are shaped around where you are in your pregnancy and what your body needs that day.

Atma Wellbeing is based in the heart of Dee Why on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, making us the closest specialist clinic for pregnancy massage for swelling across suburbs including Manly, Brookvale, Collaroy, Narrabeen and Mona Vale.
Swelling in pregnancy happens because your blood volume increases significantly while your growing uterus puts gentle pressure on the veins returning blood from your lower body. That slows circulation and allows fluid to settle in your legs, ankles and hands. Our pregnancy massage for swelling works with these physiological changes, using careful lymphatic techniques to help your body do what it is already trying to do, only more effectively and with considerably less discomfort.
The Power Touch® method, developed by Saura Rates over more than 16 years of clinical practice, combines therapeutic massage, lymphatic drainage and postural support into one continuous treatment. Designed for the whole body rather than isolated symptoms, it is particularly well suited to the layered, shifting experience of pregnancy.
Clients leave feeling lighter, more settled and genuinely more comfortable in their bodies. That is what pregnancy massage for swelling is supposed to feel like.
Our frequently asked questions
Is pregnancy massage safe for swelling?
Yes. Pregnancy massage for swelling is safe throughout the second and third trimesters when performed by a qualified therapist who understands how to adapt pressure, positioning and technique for a pregnant body. At Atma, our therapists are trained in prenatal and postnatal massage. We work with your body’s natural responses and keep communication open throughout the session so that everything stays comfortable and supportive.
When in my pregnancy should I start coming in for swelling?
In the second trimester, when swelling tends to become more noticeable. There is no single right time. We will talk through your stage of pregnancy and your symptoms when you book, and shape the session around where you are.
How many sessions will I need to feel a difference?
Many clients feel a genuine difference after their first session, particularly in terms of reduced heaviness and better sleep that night. For ongoing management of pregnancy swelling, we generally suggest sessions every one to two weeks through your second and third trimesters. Your therapist will give you a clearer recommendation based on your symptoms and how your body responds after the first visit.
Will the massage be uncomfortable or too deep?
No. Pregnancy massage for swelling uses gentle, rhythmic strokes rather than deep or firm pressure. The aim is to encourage your lymphatic system to drain naturally, which requires a light, sustained touch. If at any point during the session something feels uncomfortable, simply let your therapist know, and we will adjust immediately. Your comfort guides the entire session.
Can I have pregnancy massage for swelling in my third trimester?
Yes, and many of our clients find the third trimester is when they need it most. Swelling tends to be at its peak in the final weeks, and a well-adapted session can make a real difference to how your legs, ankles and lower body feel day to day. Sessions in the third trimester are always performed with particular care and open communication throughout to make sure everything remains comfortable.
Does pregnancy massage for swelling help with back pain as well?
Yes. While the primary focus is on encouraging fluid to drain and reducing the heaviness that comes with swelling, we also work through the lower back and hips as part of the full-body sequence. Many clients find the combination of lymphatic drainage and postural support addresses both the swelling and the associated back pain within the same session, which is one of the reasons a whole-body approach works so much better than targeting one area alone.
Can I have pregnancy massage if I'm high risk?
This depends on your specific situation. We always recommend checking with your healthcare provider first. Some high-risk conditions are fine with modified massage, others require us to wait. Conditions like placenta previa, pre-eclampsia, or risk of premature labour need medical clearance. We’re happy to speak with your doctor or midwife about what’s safe for your situation. Your safety and baby’s wellbeing always come first.
Are there situations where prenatal massage is not recommended?
While prenatal massage is safe for most healthy pregnancies, certain conditions require clearance from your healthcare provider. These include high-risk pregnancies, preeclampsia, uncontrolled high blood pressure, placenta complications and any recent bleeding. If you are unsure whether prenatal massage is right for you, we encourage you to speak with your midwife or obstetrician before booking.
Can massage help prepare me for labour?
While we don’t induce labour (and avoid any techniques that might), pregnancy massage helps prepare your body in other ways. Regular massage keeps your muscles flexible and relaxed, teaches you breathing and relaxation techniques useful during labour, and helps you connect with your body.
What about after baby arrives – when can I return?
Postnatal massage is wonderful for recovery, but timing depends on your birth experience. For uncomplicated vaginal delivery, gentle massage can start around 6 weeks. C-section recovery typically needs 10-12 weeks. We modify techniques to avoid tender areas and can even accommodate breastfeeding needs. Postnatal massage helps with feeding postures, carrying positions, sleep deprivation tension, and emotional adjustment. Many new mums say it’s their essential self-care.
Do you have special pregnancy massage packages?
Yes! We offer trimester packages that provide regular support throughout your pregnancy at a reduced rate. Our “Nurture and Restore” gift certificates are perfect baby shower presents. Many partners purchase packages as push presents. Regular sessions throughout pregnancy provide cumulative benefits – consistent care means we can address issues before they become major problems.
