Prenatal Massage
Safe, gentle prenatal massage that eases back pain, reduces swelling and helps you feel like yourself again. Personalised care for every stage of your pregnancy.
No more sleepless nights from hip pain. No more swollen ankles that won’t settle. No more feeling like you have to “just deal with it” until baby arrives. Our pregnancy massage is your permission to feel comfortable again.
At its core, prenatal massage uses gentle, targeted techniques to ease muscular tension, improve circulation and help your body adapt more comfortably to each new trimester.
Whether you are dealing with lower back pain from your shifting centre of gravity, hip discomfort as your pelvis prepares for birth, tight shoulders from postural changes, swollen ankles or restless nights, prenatal massage addresses it all. Each session is tailored to your trimester, your comfort and whatever your body needs that day. We use supported side-lying positioning with full cushioning so you can truly relax.
This is not just self-care. This is specialised prenatal support that helps you feel more like yourself, even as your body does extraordinary things each week.
Nurturing relief for expecting & new mothers, just when you need it most.
Since 2008, we’ve been supporting expecting mothers through every stage of pregnancy and beyond. Our pregnancy massage isn’t something we added to our menu – it’s been central to our practice since day one. When local midwives and obstetricians recommend massage, they send their patients to us. Why? Because they know our therapists are properly trained, our techniques are completely safe, and we genuinely understand what pregnancy asks of your body. You’re not just getting a massage; you’re getting care from people who’ve helped thousands of mothers feel better during this transformative time.
Why expecting mothers choose our Prenatal Massage?
Every pregnancy is different, but the need for comfort and relief is universal. Whether you are in your first, second or third trimester, our prenatal massage delivers the support you need.
First-time mothers come to us overwhelmed by the changes and looking for reassurance that massage is safe. Experienced mothers return because they remember how much prenatal care helped last time. Working mothers juggling career and pregnancy need targeted relief for desk strain layered on top of pregnancy tension. And postnatal mothers recovering from birth find gentle care that supports healing and adjusts to new routines. Whatever brings you to us, every session is completely personalised to your body, your trimester and your comfort.
Back Pain Relief
Ease the persistent ache from your shifting centre of gravity. We target the muscles working overtime to support your growing bump, helping you stand, sit and sleep with noticeably less discomfort.
Hip & Pelvis Care
Soothe the deep discomfort caused by loosening ligaments and pelvic changes. Gentle techniques help you walk, rest and move through your day with greater ease and less of that heavy, dragging feeling.
Swelling Relief
Light lymphatic work encourages healthy fluid movement, easing the puffiness in your ankles, legs and hands. Many clients notice a visible difference and feel lighter after just one prenatal massage session.
Better Sleep
Pregnancy insomnia is real and exhausting. Our techniques calm your nervous system, release muscular tension and help your body find the deep rest it desperately needs to keep going strong.
Emotional Balance
Create space for calm and connection with your baby. Prenatal massage helps lower stress hormones while supporting the production of serotonin and dopamine, gently lifting your mood when you need it most.
Postnatal Support
Your care does not end at birth. Gentle postnatal massage supports recovery, eases tension from feeding postures and helps your body heal after the physical demands of pregnancy and delivery.

Prenatal massage at Atma Wellbeing is more than relaxation. It is a considered clinical approach developed by our physiotherapist founder, combining evidence-based techniques with genuine warmth and care for what pregnancy asks of your body.
During pregnancy, your body produces relaxin to loosen joints and ligaments in preparation for birth. This creates instability in your pelvis, lower back and hips, often leading to discomfort that standard massage simply cannot address properly. Our therapists understand these physiological changes and use techniques specifically adapted for each stage.
In the first trimester, we focus on gentle support through early changes and fatigue. During the second and third trimesters, we address the increasing load on your spine, fluid retention in your lower limbs and the tension that builds from constantly adapting to a new centre of gravity.
Every session begins with a conversation about how you are feeling that day. Your therapist adjusts pressure, positioning and focus areas based on your needs. We use supported side-lying positioning with full cushioning, so there is never any pressure on your bump. This combination of clinical knowledge from our physiotherapy background, adaptive technique and genuine care is what sets our prenatal massage apart from standard treatments.
The result is something you feel immediately. Lighter, more comfortable, reconnected with your body and your baby. Ready to keep going with more ease.
Our frequently asked questions
Is prenatal massage safe during the first trimester?
Prenatal massage is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified therapist trained in antenatal care. Many facilities choose to begin sessions from the second trimester as a precaution, but there is no strong evidence that gentle, appropriate massage causes harm in early pregnancy. At Atma Wellbeing, we welcome clients from the first trimester and adapt our techniques with extra care and lighter pressure. We always recommend speaking with your healthcare provider if you have any specific concerns.
What is the difference between prenatal and antenatal massage?
Prenatal massage and antenatal massage are the same thing. Both terms refer to massage during the period before birth. In Australia, “antenatal” is more commonly used in clinical settings, while “prenatal” is widely recognised internationally.
How often should I get prenatal massage during pregnancy?
This depends on your individual needs and stage of pregnancy. Many clients benefit from monthly sessions during the first and second trimesters, increasing to fortnightly visits in the third trimester when discomfort typically increases. Some mothers find weekly sessions helpful in the final weeks before birth. Your therapist will recommend a schedule based on how your body is responding.
Will I be able to lie face down during my pregnancy massage?
Yes. We use a specially designed Massage Pregnancy Bolster that supports your body and bump so you can lie face down safely and comfortably. This is a favourite among our clients because it allows your therapist to work directly on your back and shoulders without any awkward positioning. Depending on your trimester and comfort, we may also use supported side-lying. Your therapist will always check what feels best for you before and during your session.
Can prenatal massage help with pregnancy-related back pain?
Many clients experience significant relief from lower back pain after prenatal massage. As your baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts forward, placing extra strain on your back muscles and spine. Our therapists target these overworked areas with gentle, effective techniques designed to ease tension and improve your comfort between sessions.
What should I wear to my prenatal massage appointment?
Wear whatever feels most comfortable for you. You will be draped with sheets throughout the session for warmth and privacy, with only the area being treated uncovered at any time. Many clients wear underwear and remove other clothing, but your comfort and privacy always come first. There is absolutely no pressure to undress beyond what feels right for you.
What about morning sickness – will massage make it worse?
Actually, gentle pregnancy massage can help with nausea. We adjust our techniques for first-trimester clients, using lighter pressure and avoiding any movements that might trigger nausea. Some acupressure points can specifically help with morning sickness. We keep sessions shorter if needed and ensure you’re comfortable throughout. Many clients find the relaxation helps reduce nausea intensity.
Can I have pregnancy massage if I'm high risk?
This depends on your specific situation. We always recommend checking with your healthcare provider first. Some high-risk conditions are fine with modified massage, others require us to wait. Conditions like placenta previa, pre-eclampsia, or risk of premature labour need medical clearance. We’re happy to speak with your doctor or midwife about what’s safe for your situation. Your safety and baby’s wellbeing always come first.
Are there situations where prenatal massage is not recommended?
While prenatal massage is safe for most healthy pregnancies, certain conditions require clearance from your healthcare provider. These include high-risk pregnancies, preeclampsia, uncontrolled high blood pressure, placenta complications and any recent bleeding. If you are unsure whether prenatal massage is right for you, we encourage you to speak with your midwife or obstetrician before booking.
Can massage help prepare me for labour?
While we don’t induce labour (and avoid any techniques that might), pregnancy massage helps prepare your body in other ways. Regular massage keeps your muscles flexible and relaxed, teaches you breathing and relaxation techniques useful during labour, and helps you connect with your body. Many clients say learning to relax during massage helped them manage labour contractions better. We can also teach your birth partner some comfort techniques for labour day.
What about after baby arrives – when can I return?
Postnatal massage is wonderful for recovery, but timing depends on your birth experience. For uncomplicated vaginal delivery, gentle massage can start around 6 weeks. C-section recovery typically needs 10-12 weeks. We modify techniques to avoid tender areas and can even accommodate breastfeeding needs. Postnatal massage helps with feeding postures, carrying positions, sleep deprivation tension, and emotional adjustment. Many new mums say it’s their essential self-care.
Do you have special pregnancy massage packages?
Yes! We offer trimester packages that provide regular support throughout your pregnancy at a reduced rate. Our “Nurture and Restore” gift certificates are perfect baby shower presents. Many partners purchase packages as push presents. Regular sessions throughout pregnancy provide cumulative benefits – consistent care means we can address issues before they become major problems.
