Sports Massage + Lymphatic Drainage for Athletes
The ultimate combination for lifters and athletes. Sports massage targets muscle recovery and performance. Lymphatic drainage sculpts definition and flushes excess fluid. Together, they deliver faster recovery, sharper physique, and peak performance.
Sculpt & Heal isn’t your typical massage. It’s a strategic combination designed specifically for athletes, bodybuilders, and serious fitness enthusiasts. We understand that your body has unique demands, and generic treatments won’t cut it when you’re pushing for personal bests and physique goals.

Each session is completely customised to your priorities. Need to focus on muscle recovery after heavy leg day? We’ll spend more time on sports massage techniques to release tension, improve circulation, and speed up healing. Preparing for a competition or photo shoot and want maximum definition? We’ll emphasise lymphatic drainage to flush excess water, tighten skin over muscles, and bring out those sharp lines you’ve worked so hard to build. Most clients benefit from a balanced approach, combining both modalities for comprehensive recovery and aesthetic results.
The sports massage component uses targeted techniques including deep tissue work to release stubborn muscle knots, trigger point therapy for specific pain areas, myofascial release to improve mobility, and stretching techniques to enhance flexibility. This isn’t relaxation massage. It’s therapeutic work designed to address the specific stresses that heavy training places on your body, from shoulder and back tension to knee pain and elbow issues common in lifters.
The lymphatic drainage element is where physique transformation happens. Using gentle, rhythmic techniques, we stimulate your lymphatic system to release excess fluid that masks muscle definition. This is particularly effective for reducing bloating around the midsection, tightening skin over muscles, enhancing vascularity and muscle tone, and achieving that dry, shredded look competitors want. The combination is powerful because improved circulation from sports massage enhances lymphatic flow, creating synergistic results you won’t get from either treatment alone.

Sculpt & Heal at Atma Wellbeing delivers what serious athletes need: faster recovery times, enhanced performance, and the physique definition that reflects your training commitment. This specialised treatment combines clinical sports massage with advanced lymphatic drainage techniques.
Sports massage addresses the specific demands of athletic training. Whether you’re managing shoulder and back pain from heavy pressing movements, treating tennis or golfer’s elbow from overuse, addressing knee pain from squats and running, or recovering from intense training sessions, targeted massage techniques release muscle tension, break down scar tissue, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation for faster healing. Our therapists understand athletic anatomy and the specific stress patterns that different training styles create, allowing us to provide truly effective treatment rather than generic massage.
Lymphatic drainage transforms how your physique presents. By stimulating your body’s natural drainage system, we help flush excess water weight for reduced bloating and leaner appearance, tighten skin over muscles for enhanced definition, bring out sharper muscle separation and lines, and boost vascularity and overall muscle tone. This is particularly valuable during competition prep, after bulking phases, or anytime you want to see the full results of your training efforts. Located conveniently in Dee Why with flexible scheduling including early morning and evening appointments, Atma Wellbeing has been the trusted choice for Northern Beaches athletes since 2008.
Our frequently asked questions
How is this different from regular massage?
Sculpt & Heal is specifically designed for athletic bodies with performance and physique goals. Regular massage focuses on relaxation. Our treatment combines sports massage techniques (deep tissue, trigger point therapy, myofascial release) with lymphatic drainage for body composition benefits. We understand training stress, muscle mechanics, and the specific issues athletes face. This is clinical treatment that happens to feel great, not spa relaxation attempting to address athletic needs.
How often should athletes book this treatment?
It depends on training intensity and goals. For heavy training phases or injury recovery, weekly sessions provide optimal support. For maintenance and general performance, fortnightly sessions work well. During competition prep, weekly sessions in the final 4 to 6 weeks help achieve peak conditioning. Many athletes start with our 5-session package and then maintain monthly or fortnightly, increasing frequency around competitions or intense training blocks. We’ll recommend a schedule based on your specific situation during consultation.
Will sports massage hurt?
Sports massage uses firmer pressure than relaxation massage and can cause temporary discomfort, especially when addressing trigger points or areas of chronic tightness. However, this should be productive discomfort, that “good hurt” feeling when tight tissue releases, never sharp or unbearable pain. Different techniques involve different sensations. Deep tissue work feels intensely pressured but shouldn’t cause you to tense up defensively. Trigger point therapy can be briefly uncomfortable as we release specific knots. Stretching should feel challenging but controlled, never forced. Our therapists constantly communicate with you throughout treatment, adjusting pressure and technique to keep it effective yet tolerable. Remember, any brief discomfort during treatment delivers lasting relief and improved performance afterward.
Do you work with bodybuilders preparing for competitions?
Absolutely. Many competitive bodybuilders use Sculpt & Heal during prep, particularly in the final 4 to 8 weeks. Lymphatic drainage is highly effective for achieving that dry, conditioned look judges reward. We work with your prep timeline, understanding peak week strategies and how massage timing affects your presentation. Sessions can be scheduled to complement your water and sodium manipulation protocols. Some competitors come weekly, others increase to twice weekly in the final fortnight. We’ll work with your coach’s protocols if you have one.
Can sports massage prevent injuries?
Absolutely. Regular sports massage is one of the most effective injury prevention strategies for athletes and active individuals. It prevents injuries by identifying and addressing muscle imbalances before they cause problems, maintaining healthy tissue flexibility and function, reducing excessive muscle tension that limits movement quality, improving biomechanics through better range of motion, flushing metabolic waste that contributes to fatigue and breakdown, and keeping you aware of your body’s condition so you can adjust training accordingly. Many common sports injuries like muscle strains, tendonitis, and overuse problems develop gradually from accumulated tension, poor recovery, and minor imbalances. Sports massage catches these issues early when they’re easy to address rather than waiting until they sideline you completely.
How often should I get sports massage?
This depends on your training intensity, competition schedule, and injury history. Serious athletes training daily or competing regularly benefit from weekly sports massage. Recreational athletes training three to five times weekly typically need fortnightly sessions. Weekend warriors or casual gym-goers might maintain with monthly treatments. Increase frequency during heavy training blocks or competition season. Many athletes schedule more frequent lighter sessions during intense training and less frequent deeper work during recovery weeks. Your therapist will assess your needs during your first session and recommend an optimal schedule. Consistency matters more than frequency. Regular maintenance prevents problems better than occasional intensive treatment.
Can I train the same day as sports massage?
It depends on treatment intensity and your session focus. For lymphatic drainage-focused sessions (light pressure), training the same day is fine, though many athletes prefer training before their appointment. For deep sports massage sessions addressing significant muscle tension, we generally recommend rest for 24 hours to allow recovery. Your therapist will provide specific guidance based on the work performed. Most athletes schedule appointments on rest days or after their last training session of the day for optimal results.
Can sports massage help with muscle soreness after training?
Definitely. Post-exercise muscle soreness, what we call DOMS, results from micro-tears in muscle fibres, inflammation, and metabolic waste buildup. All things sports massage addresses effectively. Treatment within 24 to 72 hours after intense activity significantly reduces soreness duration and intensity by improving circulation to damaged tissues, flushing lactic acid and other metabolic waste faster, reducing inflammation through lymphatic drainage, releasing protective muscle tension that develops after hard training, and promoting nutrient delivery for faster tissue repair. Many athletes schedule post-event or post-training sports massage for this purpose. While some soreness is normal and even beneficial as part of adaptation, excessive soreness limits your next training session’s quality. Sports massage helps you recover faster so you can maintain training consistency without excessive downtime.
